Nutrition by Natalie (and Billy)

Recently I have been exploring the benefits of healthy eating. In my past, I have eaten like a typical American guy of my age: frozen pizzas, cheeseburgers, ice cream, cheese, BBQ ribs, salty snacks, etc. I am still struggling to get out of this phase of my life because I love eating some of those foods. One of the ironies for me of all this discovery is my perception that young liberals eat the healthiest. Young liberals appear to be more likely to be vegetarian or vegan and they appear to be more likely to accept a diversity of foods from around the world.

I have been learning a lot from a Texas gal named Natalie. Her website has a directory of about 50 videos that feature different subjects in nutrition.

This video is a general overview of what to eat on a daily basis. Natalie advocates following the Harvard Food Pyramid instead of the usual US Government’s pyramid.

Beyond Prop 8

Most of the results were in.  With all but a few House and Senate seats nailed down, my attention turned to collecting the scattered results of all the ballot measures I was following this year.  By and large, it’s your standard culture war stuff: abortion, affirmative action, gay marriage.  Read more…

Hey, you can’t smoke here!

The the Illinois smoking ban is effective January 1, 2008. Will this impact your life? I’m hoping it will force my chainsmoking mother to cut back and that none of the doomsday stories for mom and pop restaraunts will pan out. I wonder if there will be any tobacco shops that allow people to bring their own bottles popping up that are adjoined to liquor shops. Maybe they will charge for buckets of ice. Where there is a will there is a way.

Profoundity

The other day I had what passes for a profound thought in my neck of the woods. Not the more typical kind of thing that usually comes right before statements like, “Hey ya’ll watch this,” or “Here hold my beer a minute.” No, this was actually a little deeper. I was thinking about all the debate on nationalized health care, or socialized medicine. (Sorry but let’s call a duck a duck). Now, I have some doctors in my family, so I may have a slightly different view than most, and I am lucky enough to have employment with pretty good health care coverage. In fact, let’s broaden this even a little more to socialized anything, or just plain ole socialism. Read more…
