Emily Frank’s response to my letter in the Daily Illini
I appreciate Emily’s response (http://bit.ly/3inYm) to my letter in the Daily Illini (http://bit.ly/1uZudn) , but I’d love to know— what vested interest does she have in defending Housing’s utterly pitiful response to Thursday’s flood?
She’s not a housing resident (as she mentioned in her letter) and lives in a house. Frank can in no way compare her situation to our situation at Allen. Living in a house means that the resident is responsible for most maintenance issues. Living in University Housing means that the University is responsible for all maintenance issues.
The end of an era – Andrew Mason says goodbye
Today the Daily Illini Opinions Editor, Andrew Mason, wrote a farewell column. I’ve had the privilege to get to know Andrew and to discuss many issues concerning the student body, the University, and the state with him. Andrew has a first class temperament, excellent judgment, complete journalistic integrity, and mighty pen. He has championed important student issues, and insisted on accountability from administrators. He takes bold positions, but always does so thoughtfully, with deliberate grace.
I will miss reading his work. In the seven years I spent reading the DI almost every day as a student, and the other three years I’ve continued to read the paper (one before law school, and two after), I believe that Andy Mason is probably the best writer to serve as Opinions Editor. I’ll miss having the opportunity to read his work on a daily basis.
Best of luck Andrew, and Bravo!
Too Much Technology?
After last week’s Chief column, I decided to go a little lighter on this one. Here is today’s column about our dependence on technology- does it enrich our lives? Or are we all destined for social self-withdrawal? Read more…
Political speech at Illinois
This week was a victory for free speech at Illinois. President B. Joe White retracted a wrongheaded ethics policy that restricted political speech. White eventually did the right thing, but he displayed a startling lack of common sense and waiting almost three weeks to revoke the policy was a failure of leadership.
Final DI Column: Rudy Giuliani is a Fearmongering Hack, and He’s Going Down
Rudy for president? Sure, if you want an arrogant fool whose failure to safeguard his city prior to 9/11 caused needless additional first responder deaths. But keep casting those stones!

Lally’s DI Column: Death Should Hold Meaning
I know she’d probably get around to it eventually, but I wanted to put it up now because I enjoyed it so thoroughly: “Death Should Hold Meaning: Why You Should Be Reading an Obituary Instead of this Column.” It’s a beautiful piece of writing.
RIP: John McCain’s Integrity
We gather here to pay our respects…
Billy, all eyes are on you. Let’s hear some B.S. about how he’s just being a pragmatist.
