Couch surfing

Would you like to travel all over the world–meeting locals and staying on their couch–for free? If so, I recommend that you check out “Couch surfing”. The CouchSurfing website allows you to find members across the globe who are interested in meeting travelers. Some couch surfers just want to meet up for coffee–and give you the “local” tour of where you are visiting–and other couch surfers will allow you to crash on their couch/guest bedroom for free for a few days. People can view profiles of couch surfer members to see if they can find someone with similar interests to hang out with while traveling. I highly recommend this website to travelers.

  1. Call me paranoid, but this sounds like the perfect opening plot to a horror movie ala the 70s hitchiker ones…

  2. I’m calling you paranoid, Brandon.

  3. Yeah, that’s just weird.

  4. I’ve known a number of folks who have done this and, while you do meet some strange people, it has worked out well for them.

There have always been urban legends of horrible things happening to hitchhikers, too. Before I hitched cross-country as a teen-ager, they warned me in no uncertain terms that I was going to end up dead.

In truth, it was a memorable experience. The only movie incident was more like a porn movie when a housewife in Kansas propositioned me and then kicked me out of the car when I refused her advances. (What was I thinking?)

I’d do it. If I was a lone female, I’d certainly hesitate or look for an escort, but as a male, I see little to worry about.

  5. Segen, this looks awesome, thanks for posting about it. I’m probably going to use it once or twice in the next year :)

  6. I joined this couch surfing network. You know my name–find me on there!

You are always welcome to crash on my couch too–regardless of whether or not you are a “couch surfer”.

My couch is comfy. Just ask Todd from the blog and fellow Champaign couch surfer! (Hi, Todd!)

  7. I’m one of those people that Tet knows that uses couchsurfing. It really is a great way to meet folks from all walks of life. There are also a couple of other similar websites including:
