The Constant Struggle to Be Hip

Peter Suderman asks in response to the release of this new Death Cab for Cutie song: “Has Ben Gibbard sold out yet, or is he still cool? Have we arrived at the backlash to the backlash stage yet?…I kind of like the song, but I need to know whether my indie cred will suffer if I say so.” I don’t have much indie cred to begin with, but I’ll weigh in and say that I think he’s still cool.

You have to be patient with this song (as in, wait until about halfway into it for it to really get started, which is annoying), but it’s fairly rewarding if you are.

  1. I think Brian should start outlining instead of posting mindless crap about shitty music and shitty food . . . my respect for the bloggers on this site is spiraling downward rapidly.

  2. Dont hate. We are currently working on a redesign that will make it easier for you to spend less time reading posts by bloggers you aren’t fond of. That should improve your experience if you’re frustrated by some among us.

Also, if you are interested in generating higher quality content than that which you see here now, feel free to email a guest post to us at urbanagora@gmail.com

BJP is trying to add some variety, really, scrolling past this post and the food post shouldn’t be too much of a burden.

I also think this song sucks, though it is pretty good in the second half, it’s not good enough to justify the waste of time that is the first half. And the arrogance of writing a song that makes your listeners suffer waiting for the good stuff makes me question the coolness of the song and the writer. Then again, I am uncool.

  3. I like Brian’s posts. He churns out lots of quality, well thought-out posts. I think it’s nice to change it up every once in a while and have a more light-hearted post.

I was just listening to The Photo Album when I read this post, haha. I have negative indie credibility, but those lyrics seemed to be pretty lame by Gibbard’s standards. The music was catchy, I guess, and I liked it, but I’m also a big pop music fan, so TIFWIW.

  4. I like the first half better.
