I Hope This Isn’t Pathetic and Callow Too

If you’re ever in a bad mood for any reason, go out and rent the movie Once. It will solve all of life’s problems for at least one hour and twenty-five minutes.

While we’re recommending movies, I saw “Across the Universe” for the first time a couple of weeks ago. What a cool movie that is. I love Jim Sturgess (he’s in “21,” which comes out this Friday).
“Volver” is super as well.

While that movie indeed looks to be gay, I was shocked to see that you weren’t recommending a gay love story.

Once is an incredible movie. Rent the movie and buy the soundtrack.

Another amazing “must-see” movie is the movie:
“The Lives of Others” (or in German, “Das Leben der Anderen”).
It is about the Stasi (secret police) in East Berlin and how the government destroys so much hope in people…but that human goodness can overcome brainwashing.
It won a bunch of awards or something. Don’t know which ones. Good film.

Katie, I wrote Farmboys on the Wall after seeing Across the Universe.
The movie definitely ranks in the top two or three movies ever made about the 60s. Very true to life, completely able to catch the mood. It’s damn near an opera, and I’d recommend it to everyone.
Segen’s right–The Lives of Others needs to be seen. I think that everyone who is interested in keeping the US from becoming a police state should watch it to see what we’re fighting against.
