Hoosiers Fans Suck Too

A few minutes ago a friend of mine who has the misfortune of being an Indiana University alum rather than an Illinois alum, sent me this ridiculous article by Dan Wetzel. It essentially argues that Indiana fans should be glorified as Christ-like moral beacons because they aren’t outraged that their mens basketball coach Kelvin Sampson will be fired for being one of the cheatingest cheats to ever cheat.

I wanted to share my reply with the Agora, so any other Illini fans out there will know how to respond to delusional Hoosiers trying anoint themselves with oils:

“It’s curious how far the author goes in glorifying the fans, when all
they have done is concede that their coach was so corrupt they couldn’t
defensibly argue that he should be able to keep his job. Come on, we
know the truth don’t we? Indiana fans hope that by sacrificing their
coach, the program will get off a little lighter for cheating. How
noble! There are the same fans who supported hiring a corrupt coach in
the first place. These are the same fans who didn’t really object to
Bobby Knight assaulting the students who played for him.

Go Illini”

Update: Indiana players suck too. (thanks Todd)

  1. The reaction to these allegations is a little silly. Honestly, a couple hundred phone calls? From a guy who probably makes ten thousand a year? Who cares. What does a phone call do anyway. It’s not like he’s wiring them money or buying them cars. If the NCAA really wanted to clean up college basketball, they would start investigating people like this rather than coaches that violated some sort of technicality.

  2. Why does the wind in Illinois blow from west to east?

    (Because Indiana sucks.)

  3. Kofi,

Although I totally agree that the NCAA is a bunch of silly dolts, you really can’t defend Sampson in this case since all the other coaches in division 1 basketball were able to not break this rule.

Some of these rules have been created to protect these young kids from being pestered to death by coaches.

Anyway, I love Bobby Knight, so I can’t exactly endorse Augur’s last portion of his comment. However, I’ll agree that Indiana is awful. They’re going to be a terrible team next year when that jerk, Gordon, leaves for the NBA.

Honestly, I’m more concerned by the fact that the Illini are worse than awful this year, which doesn’t bode well for the recruiting skills of Bruce Webber at this point.

  4. No, its all good. Bruce Weber is going to have incredible recruiting classes in 2012, since he is currently working the middle schools.

  5. Kofi -

Extra phone calls can potentially give them recruiting advantages.

While the NCAA is a joke, he left Oklahoma’s program with sanctions because of the same type of thing, except to a much larger degree, and IU already had to deal with some of the limitations put on Sampson (due to the sanctions)when it hired him.

You’re right that the infractions themselves seem to be overhyped, but it’s more the fact that a) he’s a repeat offender who basically spit in the NCAA’s face; b) more importantly, he apparently lied to IU and NCAA officials about this stuff.

Kelvin Sampson is a completely unethical slimeball, in more ways than just this stuff (see: Eric Gordon situation, his graduation rate at Oklahoma); no need to feel sorry for him in any way, shape, or form.

This story is turning into all kinds of awesome. I thought the players were bluffing about the walkout, but apparently D.J. White and 5 other players didn’t show at practice today. Unfortunately, they play NU tomorrow, and could probably throw out 5 guys from the local gym and still win.

My guess is - for a number of reasons - that they end up playing, tomorrow and for the rest of the season, but at this point I suppose it’s possible those guys will miss at least part of the game tomorrow.
