Republican Senators Norm Coleman and Pete Domenici are proposing an amendment to the immigration bill that would make women's immigration status known to federal authorities if they report domestic violence to local police. That amendment would overturn protections that make these women's status confidential in cases of domestic abuse. Those protections were created because immigrant women face greater barriers to reporting domestic abuse than women who are citizens. Often times the abusing partner will threaten to report immigrant victims and get them deported, or threaten to withdraw petitions to legalize their immigrant status. And so, if the GOP had their way, immigrant women would be forced to choose between deportation and abuse. Compassionate conservatism at its finest.
This amendment is repulsive in its callousness. Who disagrees?

The whole bill needs to be flushed down the toilet.
The only good thing about this whole process is that the blogosphere has placed the Senate under a microscope and readers have gotten a chance to look at the human/slime mold hybrids that dwell there.
Harry Reid's machinations on this bill, as well as the tricks that the "amnesty" Republicans are pulling should be sufficient to show that there is no real difference between the parties.
They're both dedicated to creating a permanent underclass working at below legal wages to subsidize those capitalists without the sufficient talent to wean themselves from the government's teat.
Darth Vader stuff, seriously. If I wasn't already a paranoid crazy, I would be by the end of this bill's lifetime.

I agree, I just disagree with your characterization of it.
First, it's not indicative of the policy goals of all Republicans or all conservatives.
Second, it's entirely possible that the two Senators in question want to "poison pill" the entire immigration bill, and they know that by including such an objectionable amendment, that the full bill would never be able to pass. I do not know if that's why they introduced this amendment, but I do know that a number of "poison pill" amendments have been introduced in an attempt to kill this entire bill, and this may be one of them.
That's true. It would be great if that was the case and it succeeded.
